Useless Opening

Useless Opening

Last summer, I went to Darya Kenar to visit a new project. I do not have any idea about it’s architect but I am familiar with the contractor because of his attention to detail and  high performance accuracy. Anyway, I asked one of my friends to join me. So we went there to have a review about one of the details about  the roof garden that was worked and was visible from the outside. This project was built in the corner of a 500-meter plot, on one of the most favorite and popular alleys of this residential suburb. This villa has a modern architecture with exposed concrete and metal details, huge windows, especially a window with a six-meter opening and a five-meter height facing the street. As soon as we arrived, parked our car in the opposite direction to see the front facade.  The owner who is apparently a resident, closed the window shutters with the remote control!

At that moment, questions popped into my head. what was the reason of these huge windows? Why we need such windows if the residence may be bothered by the presence of pedestrians and close the drapes? What was the reason for making such dimensions in openings with high construction cost and difficult maintenance?  Is this window placed only as a project design? Or was it the request of the employer and the subsequent problems were not justified for them?

Should we, as architects, design a form that is attractive only in terms of beauty or diagram, or should we create a space where the living conditions are comfortable for the user?

In my opinion, every form we create affects the user’s life in that space. Because what we design or build is not just a form, not just a building, but a place where life flows easily.
