Teaching always has been one my interest in life, during 2012 to 2014 I had the honour to be mentor in university of Tehran and some universities in different cities in Iran. In one of my flights to Sistan-Baluchestan province there was a rise in flight’s tickets so the airline which I usually travelled with changed its airplane from Airbus A300 to BEA146. One of the main features in this model is that the wings attached to its body by ceiling, therefore the overhead compartment have less height from others. I was amazed by the location of the wings as it was the first time, I had travelled with it.
As usual the aisle was full of passengers who were waiting to put their carry-on in the overhead bin. In the meantime, there was a couple trying to fit the hand luggage and it did not fit! They started to complain about it to the flight attendant. Poor flight attendant got nervous and constantly searching for the answer to this problem in her head, you could tell from her face. Suddenly, I just said because the wings are part of the body of the plane and the height of the luggage bin is normally less than the others and if it is possible, use another overhead compartment. All three of them looked at me and the flight attendance asked me: I’m sorry, can I ask what is your job? I am an architect; that was their answer.
Even before I choose architecture as a career, I always pay attention to the details of my surroundings, however, it was quite interesting for me that they connected my attentiveness to my career!
So, a question popped in my head, do an architect need to be detail oriented? Or a detail-oriented person can be an architect?
Through years, I have the honour to work with various architects. Some had holistic view, some were drowned themselves in detail, some were conceptual, and some were looking for the specific ideals. The world most famous architects always had a keen eye for details to the extent that influential in the way of producing a work and the way they were executed products. There are many buildings around the world that give you the feeling that there is an artist or a creative and pure idea behind these masterpieces. The main point is the specific details usually lead individuals to think about that there is an architect behind this beautiful building. In my opinion, it is good that an architect or an architect student pay attention to detail in any architectural style they like, the good news is, it can be acquired because the distinguishing feature of the work is to deal with their details.
