SkyLight

SkyLight

Light is the source of life. It effected our surroundings in so many ways, physically, biologically and mentally. Published research shows the positive effects of natural light, especially in spaces used in long term periods, such as offices, houses, hospital rooms, etc.

Architecture is about creating a place that match an individuals’ needs. So, what is more important than light?

People have a natural attraction and need for daylight. Studies suggest that day-lighting has a direct impact on well-being, productivity and overall sense of satisfaction. Skylights are widely used in designing day-lighting for residential, public, and commercial buildings. Increased sunlight can result in less electrical lighting use and smaller sized window, saving energy, lowering costs, and reducing environmental impacts. Day-lighting can cut lighting energy use in some buildings by up to 80%.

It is important to benefit natural light in housing in an effective and logical way. If it is not planned properly, using natural lighting can result in undesirable heat gains. It may seem that it would be difficult to increase the amount of light without bringing in extra heat. Therefore, the selection and placement of windows and skylights should be determined by the amount of light needed and be based upon climate and the design of the building.

Our team benefited skylight in Villa1275 project. The first reason was the accessibility to light for the North and the South zone. Our client wanted a double ceiling (6m height) on the ground floor. The second was to benefit the South light without using a curtain to avoid direct sun.

Aesthetic aspect was the last item. Our final decision was to play with (light, height, space, materials). So, because the height difference, the material differentiation between both zones. These elements alongside a floating black stair for connecting floors was the last touch to emphasize our gap full of light to make a beautiful spatial composition to our space.
